The Power of the Visual

“A visual image is a simple thing, a picture that enters the eyes.”
Roy H. Williams

God, as the ultimate creator, communicates his love through the many pictures he creates. I encourage you to take notice of specific aspects of creation that surround you. Talk to God about what you see, and ask him what he might want you to notice that expresses his heart for you.

Through nature, God is able to teach us, speak to us, and provide for us.

Have you ever closely observed the speedy and purposeful flight of a bumblebee, the effortlessness of a swimming otter, or the vibrancy of a dew-dropped rose? How easily we miss observing these pictures because we are distracted or preoccupied.

Our lives easily can become propelled by the tyranny of the urgent, rather than the deliberate pause to observe the important.

Why is this distinction important? Because although our lives are filled with responsibilities and tasks, if that becomes our overwhelming focus we lose sight of the things that deeply fill our soul (delight, wonder, joy, rest, thankfulness). We can become driven, anxious and restless people.

In contrast, encountering God’s artistry can lighten our loads and adjust our lenses. Psalm 19:1 tells us, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.”

If you’re looking for another way to connect with God – something that doesn’t require lots of reading or endless discussion – take a little time to create. Create something visual. We can use a variety of mediums to express our praise and participate in the joy of creation - from paint to pastels, from camera shots to clay.

“Seeing” and “creating” can calm us down, relax us, and help heal our souls from distress.

Please let me pray for you as you head out into your day.

Dear Lord, thank you for giving us eyes to see the beauty of your creation. For those who feel compelled to accomplish, busy with many responsibilities, or feeling a sense of loss or pain, may they give themselves permission to pause and experience the world around us. Let them marvel at what you have done and perhaps take a few minutes to co-create with you. May we look at your creation, seeing ways you teach us, speak to us and provide for us. In Your Name, Jesus. Amen.

What might be a step for you to experience more of God through “seeing” or “creating”?

(I’ve included a few of my own photos and art projects to encourage you and stimulate your thinking.)

Please add a comment and let me know what new things God helps you to see or create. I’d love to cheer you on in your faith journey!
